Gastrointestinal diseases in dogs

A healthy gut is the basis for a healthy animal. We treat acute and chronic gastrointestinal diseases with nutrition, intestinal rehabilitation and targeted root cause analysis.

Why are gastrointestinal diseases in dogs so common – and so important?

The digestive tract is one of the most sensitive systems in an animal’s body. It reacts not only to food, but also to stress, environmental toxins, medications and emotional strain.
Many dogs today suffer from recurrent or chronic digestive problems – often without a clear cause.

Typical symptoms include:

  • Chronic or acute diarrhoea

  • Frequent vomiting

  • Loss of appetite or excessive hunger

  • Stomach noises, bloating or abdominal pain

  • Changing stool consistency

These symptoms should always be taken seriously – especially when they occur repeatedly or in phases.

Common gastrointestinal diseases in dogs:

In a holistic understanding, IBD often reflects chronic overload of the intestines caused by dysregulation of the immune system. The microbiome is frequently imbalanced, or the intestinal barrier is damaged.
The goal of therapy is not only to reduce inflammation but also to rebuild a healthy gut flora, stabilise the immune system (e.g., through mycotherapy or nutrient-dense nutrition), and reduce emotional stress factors.

In these cases, the body reacts oversensitively to certain substances – often a sign of an “overstimulated” immune system.
From a holistic perspective, the key question is: Why does the body suddenly perceive natural components as harmful?
This is about identifying the underlying causes, not just avoiding triggers.

A gut restoration, rebuilding of the intestinal flora, an individually tailored nutrient-rich diet and, in some cases, detoxification are central therapeutic components.

A permeable intestine allows substances to enter the body that do not belong there – which can lead to chronic inflammation.
From a holistic perspective, leaky gut is a symptom of a deeper imbalance: stress, environmental toxins, improper feeding or chronic inflammatory processes.
The goal is to strengthen the intestinal barrier, regenerate the intestinal environment and calm the autonomic nervous system.

Parasites do not appear by chance. Often, the immune system is weakened or the intestinal environment is so disrupted that parasites can easily establish themselves.
In addition to targeted parasite treatment, the holistic approach focuses on improving the intestinal environment through nutrition, phytotherapy and immune support, so that parasites cannot settle permanently.

In this condition, the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes.
From a holistic perspective, it is important to investigate the underlying causes — such as chronic inflammation or overburdened digestive organs.
In addition to supplying enzymes, we also support the liver, gallbladder and microbiome.
A diet based on easily digestible, fresh ingredients and targeted supplementation is often helpful.

Acute or chronic inflammation of the stomach lining is often the result of stress, improper nutrition, medication use or an underlying bacterial imbalance.
In a holistic approach, the focus is on protecting and soothing the mucous membranes — using natural mucosal protectants, adapted nutrition (e.g., hypoallergenic and gentle on the stomach), stress management and targeted regulation of the gut microbiome.

What you as the owner can do

Healing doesn’t happen only in the practice. Consistent support at home often makes the decisive difference – for example through:

  • Switching to a well-tolerated, nutrient-rich diet

  • Conscious feeding rhythms and avoiding late evening meals

  • Stress reduction, clear daily structure and secure bonding

  • Rebuilding the gut flora with targeted supplements

  • Regular check-ins with us – also available via DGT MEDICAL

And if you’re unsure whether this is the right approach?

We are happy to advise you. After an in-depth initial consultation with a physical examination, you will receive a personalised therapy plan. You decide whether and how you want to follow this path with us – entirely at your own pace.
